Sandals Grand Bay and Sandals Royal Barbados are two of our most-booked honeymoon resorts — and one of the most common questions we get is which one to choose. Both are exceptional. Both have outstanding butler service. Both deliver a genuinely luxurious Caribbean honeymoon experience.

But they feel completely different. Grand Bay is about dramatic natural beauty, iconic scenery, and overwater bungalows. Royal Barbados is about refined luxury, the strongest butler team in the portfolio, and sophisticated dining. The right choice depends entirely on what you want to feel on your honeymoon.

Here's the honest comparison — from a specialist who has booked hundreds of couples to both.

Grand Bay
Choose this if you want...
  • Overwater bungalows
  • Iconic Piton views & scenery
  • Ocean on both sides of the resort
  • A dramatic, postcard honeymoon
  • To explore St. Lucia's culture
Royal Barbados
Choose this if you want...
  • The best butler service anywhere
  • Refined, sophisticated luxury
  • Outstanding dining above all
  • Rooftop infinity pool experience
  • A calmer, more intimate resort

Scenery & Setting

Grand Bay
Perched on a narrow peninsula with the Caribbean Sea on both sides, Grand Bay has one of the most dramatic settings of any resort in the Caribbean. The famous Pitons — St. Lucia's iconic twin volcanic peaks — rise in the background. It's genuinely breathtaking, and no photo quite does it justice. The sunsets here are extraordinary. If your honeymoon vision is "postcard Caribbean romance," this is the resort.
Royal Barbados
Royal Barbados sits on a beautiful stretch of Maxwell Beach on Barbados's south coast. The setting is lovely — pink sand, calm turquoise water, gently swaying palms — but it's more classic Caribbean beach than dramatic showstopper. The real visual highlight is the rooftop infinity pool, which offers sweeping ocean views and is genuinely stunning, especially at sunset. Barbados as an island has a relaxed, cosmopolitan character that Royal Barbados reflects perfectly.
Edge Goes To

Grand Bay — for sheer drama and natural beauty, it's hard to match. If scenery is a priority, St. Lucia wins decisively.

Overwater Bungalows

Grand Bay
Yes — available and stunning. Grand Bay's overwater bungalows sit over calm, clear Caribbean water with views of the surrounding coastline. They include butler service, private decks, and direct water access. For couples who have dreamed of an overwater bungalow experience without flying to the Maldives, this is a spectacular option. Book these categories far in advance — they sell out quickly and for good reason.
Royal Barbados
No overwater bungalows. Royal Barbados is a beachfront resort without an overwater category. If an overwater bungalow is non-negotiable for your honeymoon, this resort simply isn't the right fit — and that's okay. What it offers instead are beautifully appointed suites, many with stunning ocean or pool views, and some of the most personalized butler service in the entire Sandals collection.
Edge Goes To

Grand Bay — by default. If overwater bungalows are important to you, Royal Barbados isn't the answer. If they're not a priority, this category is irrelevant to your decision.

Butler Service

Grand Bay
Grand Bay has an excellent butler team — this is one of the properties we consistently recommend for butler suite bookings, and couples regularly come back with glowing reviews of their butler experience. The team is attentive, personal, and genuinely makes the trip. Butler service is available in designated suite categories, not across the whole resort.
Royal Barbados
The strongest butler team in the entire Sandals portfolio. This is Royal Barbados's most consistent distinction — guest after guest, year after year, the butler service here receives the highest praise of any property. The butler-to-suite ratio is favorable, the team is exceptionally well-trained, and the personalization is remarkable. If you're investing in a butler suite, this is where that investment delivers the most. We pre-communicate your preferences before arrival so the experience starts the moment you land.
Edge Goes To

Royal Barbados — if butler service is your priority, this is the property that consistently exceeds expectations. Grand Bay is excellent too, but Royal Barbados is in a class of its own for this specific criteria.

Specialist Insight

The biggest mistake couples make is booking a butler suite at a resort where the team is stretched thin. Royal Barbados has the butler-to-suite ratio right — you genuinely feel like you have your own person, not a shared resource. We always brief your butler before you arrive with your preferences, dietary needs, and any special moments you want arranged. That pre-trip communication is the difference between good and exceptional.

Dining & Restaurants

Grand Bay
Grand Bay has a strong dining program with multiple restaurants on property, ranging from casual beachfront dining to elegant evenings. The Stay at One, Play at Three program in St. Lucia gives you access to the other two Sandals properties on the island — Halcyon Beach and Regency La Toc — expanding your dining options significantly. The overall variety is excellent, and the quality is consistently high.
Royal Barbados
Among the best dining in the Sandals portfolio. Royal Barbados is frequently cited by couples — and by our team — as having the strongest restaurant program of any Sandals property. The culinary standards here are notably elevated, with chefs who take real pride in their craft. Connected to Sandals Barbados next door, you also get dual-resort access to an expanded range of options. If food and wine are central to your honeymoon experience, this matters.
Edge Goes To

Royal Barbados — for pure culinary quality, it edges ahead. Both resorts have strong dining, but Royal Barbados consistently gets the higher marks from couples and specialists alike.

Beach & Swimming

Grand Bay
The beach at Grand Bay is calm and protected — ideal for swimming and snorkeling. It's not a long, wide stretch of sand, but the water quality is excellent and the setting with the peninsula views makes it beautiful. The calm Caribbean-side waters mean it's rarely rough. Snorkeling and water sports are well-organized and enjoyable.
Royal Barbados
Maxwell Beach is a genuinely lovely pink-sand beach — soft, clean, and beautiful. Barbados's south coast beaches are known for their calm waters (the Atlantic side can be rougher) and Maxwell Beach delivers consistently. It's a slightly longer and wider beach than what you get at Grand Bay, which some couples prefer for long morning walks or simply having more space to settle in away from others.
This One's a Tie

Both beaches are beautiful and calm. Grand Bay has the more dramatic setting; Royal Barbados has slightly more space. Neither is a disappointment — personal preference determines which matters more to you.

Overall Atmosphere & Vibe

Grand Bay
Romantic, dramatic, and a bit more lively than Royal Barbados. Grand Bay is a medium-to-large resort with a social pool scene and regular entertainment. It has the energy you'd expect from one of Sandals' most popular properties — which means it can feel busier during peak season. The overwater bungalow guests have a more private experience, but the main resort areas are vibrant and active. Couples who want to feel immersed in a beautiful, romantic atmosphere with other honeymooners around them will love it.
Royal Barbados
Refined, calm, and sophisticated. Royal Barbados has a quieter, more intimate atmosphere than Grand Bay — less lively, more understated. It attracts couples who want elegance over energy. The rooftop pool in particular has a genuinely serene quality that feels removed from the main resort bustle. For sober travelers, this is one of our top recommendations — the naturally calm atmosphere means not drinking never feels out of place. Couples who want to feel like they're in their own world will gravitate here.
Depends on You

If you want energy and a sense of being surrounded by romance and fellow honeymooners — Grand Bay. If you want quiet refinement and a resort that feels like your own private retreat — Royal Barbados.

Getting There & Practical Details

Grand Bay
Fly into Hewanorra (UVF) in the south of St. Lucia and you're looking at nearly a 2-hour transfer to the resort. Fly into George F.L. Charles (SLU) in the north and it's about 20 minutes. Always fly into SLU if possible — the difference is enormous. Flight options to St. Lucia are growing but still more limited than Barbados from some US cities. Check your departure city carefully before committing.
Royal Barbados
Barbados (BGI) has excellent flight connections from major US and UK cities, and the airport transfer to Royal Barbados is quick and easy — typically 15–20 minutes. Grantley Adams International Airport has more direct flight options than St. Lucia, which makes Barbados the more logistically convenient choice for many couples. If flight simplicity matters, Barbados has a meaningful advantage.
Edge Goes To

Royal Barbados — for easier, more direct flights from most US cities. The St. Lucia airport situation is manageable but requires more planning.

Our Honest Take

For most honeymooners, it comes
down to one question.

Do you want an overwater bungalow? If yes — Grand Bay. If no — Royal Barbados gives you the best butler service and dining experience in the Sandals portfolio, and it's hard to argue with that for a honeymoon. Both are exceptional. Neither is a wrong answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Grand Bay or Royal Barbados better for a honeymoon?
Both are among our top honeymoon recommendations in the Sandals portfolio. Grand Bay is better if you want overwater bungalows or dramatic natural scenery. Royal Barbados is better if butler service and dining are your highest priorities, or if you prefer a quieter, more refined atmosphere. The right answer depends entirely on what matters most to you.
Does Sandals Royal Barbados have overwater bungalows?
No. Royal Barbados is a beachfront resort without overwater accommodation. If an overwater bungalow is important for your honeymoon, look at Sandals Grand Bay, Sandals South Coast, or Sandals St. Vincent.
Which has better butler service?
Royal Barbados — consistently and by a meaningful margin. It's the property we recommend most often when couples tell us butler service is their top priority. Grand Bay also has an excellent butler team, but Royal Barbados is in a class of its own for this specific criteria.
Is it cheaper to fly to St. Lucia or Barbados?
It varies by departure city and time of year, but Barbados generally has more direct flight options from major US cities, which can make it easier and sometimes cheaper. St. Lucia flights require more planning — and if you do fly to St. Lucia, always fly into SLU (George F.L. Charles Airport) rather than UVF (Hewanorra) to avoid a nearly 2-hour transfer to the resort.
Can I book both on a split stay?
Sandals doesn't offer an official split-stay program between Barbados and St. Lucia properties, as they're on different islands. However, if you're planning a longer honeymoon of 10+ nights, some couples do book separate Sandals stays on back-to-back trips or on different legs of a Caribbean journey. We can help you plan this if it's something you're considering — just ask us in your consultation.
Does it cost more to book through a travel agent?
No — the price is exactly the same. Sandals pays travel agent commissions separately, so your room rate is identical whether you book direct or through a Certified Specialist. Using our team costs nothing extra and gets you insider knowledge, room location requests, honeymoon perk registration, and someone in your corner if anything goes wrong.

Still Not Sure Which One Is Right for You?

That's exactly what we're here for. A quick free consultation and we'll match you to the right resort, room category, and make sure every honeymoon perk is in place before you arrive.
